Preparing for an MRI

At AECC University College, we understand that preparing for an MRI can bring about questions and concerns. This page is designed to provide you with comprehensive information on what to expect before, during, and after your Open Upright MRI experience.

Understanding MRI Scans

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of the inside of the body. It is a safe and widely used diagnostic tool for various medical conditions.

Popularity of MRI Scans

In the UK, over 2.7 million MRI scans are conducted annually, with a notable 12.1% increase each year. The overall growth of MRI scanning has surged by 220% in the last decade.

Are There Any Risks?

There are no known risks of MRI scanning and it is considered to be very safe. However, certain safety checks are necessary for individuals with pacemakers, medical implants, or metal fragments. Our team will address these concerns during the referral process and a safety questionnaire before your scan.

Arrival and Procedure

Upon arrival, notify the reception desk about your MRI scan. Our MRI team will guide you through the process. The MRI Radiographer will ask safety questions and may advise on clothing removal if necessary.

During the Scan

The MRI Radiographer will ensure your comfort and explain the procedure. Pads and pillows may be used to help you remain still. A coil will be placed around the scanned area, and the scanning table will move to capture images. Earplugs or ear defenders are provided for your comfort.

Duration and Comfort

The scan duration varies based on the body part being scanned, with some lasting up to an hour. While MRI itself is not uncomfortable, staying still may cause mild discomfort. Our team will provide support and additional aids for your comfort.

After the Scan

You can resume normal activities, including driving and working. There are no side effects. A consultant Radiologist will report on your MRI images and this report is sent securely to your referrer within 7 days.

Can I self-refer for MRI?

We don’t accept self-referrals, you must be referred by a health professional who is registered with a public regulatory body, such as a GP, osteopath, chiropractor or consultant. However you may wish to download our referral form and pass this onto your healthcare professional.

How much does an MRI cost?

All scans at £395 per body part.

When will I find out the results of my MRI scan?

After the scans have been reported on by one of our Consultant Radiologists, the results will be sent to your referrer via Egress email, IEP Anyone, fax or post, this will take a few days. Your results will come via your referrer and not our department.

Can I have a copy of my MRI report and/or images?

Only your referrer can supply you with the results of the MRI scan.

We are able to send your images to you digitally via a secure portal called IEP Anyone. We will need to be provided with an email address and a mobile number to facilitate this.

Is there a cancellation fee?

Yes, we will charge one third of the cost of your investigation if you do not attend your appointment or cancel at short notice.

Do you have parking onsite?

We offer free parking for patients and visitors via carpark 2 (directly outside the clinic)

Is there anyone who shouldn't have an MRI?

Patients with any of the below should not undergo a MRI:

Cochlear implants
Electronically, magnetically and mechanically activated implants like pacemakers
Ferromagnetic or electronically operated active devices like cardioverter defibrillators
Metallic splinters in the eye
Ferromagnetic haemostatic clips in the brain

If you have an implant of any kind, including insulin pumps and prosthetic heart valves, please
inform your referrer so that they can ensure that you will be able to have an MRI scan

Can i bring a relative/friend?

Yes, you may be accompanied to the scan.

However, due to safety reasons, your chaperone may not be allowed into the scanning room if they have any of the prohibited items on or in them.

They are more then welcome to wait for you in the reception area, or in our campus café.

Will it be uncomfortable?

MRI itself is not uncomfortable, however you may find that keeping still in one position for the
duration of the scan may cause some discomfort. The MRI Radiographer will endeavour to minimize
this and will offer pads and pillows to aid comfort.

Are there any side effects?

There are no known side affects to MRI treatment. You will be safe to eat and drink normally afterwards, drive, and return to your day as normal

How do you cater for individuals with mobility issues?

We aim to make sure your MRI experience is as easy and stress free as possible and will try our best to adapt to your needs. With regards to mobility issues we please request that you call us prior to your appointment to discuss your needs and so we can make sure we can accommodate you when you arrive.
